Uses Amfonelic acid is a dopamine reuptake inhibitor that can be used to study the brain's dopamine pathway and dopamine transporter. It can lower the threshold for rewarding brain stimulation delivered to the medial forebrain bundle-lateral hypothalamus.

Pharmacokinetics

Amfonelic acid, a derivative of nalidixic acid, was originally developed as a central nervous system stimulant. It is a highly potent nonamphetamine stimulant whose actions are inhibited by reserpine but not by the tyrosine hydroxylase inhibitor, a-methyltyrosine.

Reference

Here, we report a practical synthesis of diversely functionalized 1,8-naphthyridone-3-carboxylic acid derivatives starting from readily available and inexpensive nicotinic acid derivatives. All key steps have been optimized. Furthermore, the usefulness of this protocol has been exemplified by the first synthesis of amfonelic acid.
