What is Acitretin (55079-83-9) used for?
Acitretin is the free acid form of etretinate useful in the treatment of severe psoriasis and other disorders of keratinization. Acitretin is used to treat severe skin disorders, such as psoriasis. It works by allowing normal growth and development of the skin. Acitretin will continue to work after you stop taking it, but after a time, the skin condition returns and you may need to take it again. In psoriasis treatment with acitretin, improvement is seen approximately at weeks 4 to 6. The maximum benefit may take between 3 to 4 months. Treatment dosing is initiated at 25 mg orally once daily.

Nine patients (53%) finished the whole 9 months of acitretin treatment. The mean acitretin dose was 0·56 ± 0·08 mg kg−1 daily. A significant improvement of clinical manifestation (HSSI, DLQI) was observed after only 1 month of therapy, and further improvement was recorded during the next few months.

Acitretin appears to be as effective as etretinate (the effective dose of acitretin varies between 25 mg/day and 50 mg/day) and can be used in the same combination regimens. Teratogenicity is the most important safety issue (acitretin is FDA pregnancy category X). Other adverse effects are strongly related to the dose. It is unique compared to other systemic therapies for psoriasis (such as methotrexate and cyclosporine) in that acitretine is not an immunosuppressive agent.
