Dextran is used to restore blood volume lost through hemorrhage. It does this by increasing cardiac output and blood flow. Dextran restores blood plasma lost through severe bleeding, which can lead to organ failure, brain damage, coma, and death. This increases cardiac output and blood flow, allowing red blood cells to circulate more effectively. Dextran binds to platelets, erythrocytes, and the vascular endothelium, reducing aggregation and adhesiveness. It also reduces Von Willebrand factor, which decreases platelet function.
